How do I book Return to Questions

Booking online

You can make a reservation anywhere in the world at any time of the day. Reservations can be made online at www.avis.ie using the Online Booking facility. You can also use this facility to obtain a quote.

What information do I need to provide? Return to Questions


You will need to provide the following information when making a booking:

  • the dates and times of travel
  • the Avis rental location(s) for collection and return
  • the car group required
  • your Wizard number or Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number if you have one

    We will then check for availability and provide a car rental quote. This will include basic insurance and VAT.From the quote, you can choose whether or not to confirm the booking. If you decide to confirm, you will be asked to provide your personal details.

What if I have an Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number
You will need to quote your Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number when making a bookingWhen booking online, you will need to enter the AWD number in the AWD number field on Step 1 of Online Booking. Please note that you do not need to type in the letters "AWD" - just type the reference number itself.

What if I have a Wizard number? Return to Questions

You will need to quote your Wizard number when making your booking.

When booking online, you will need to enter your Wizard number in the Wizard number field on Step 1 of Online Booking.

Can I book more than 1 car at a time? Return to Questions

Yes, subject to availability. Each booking will have a unique reservation number.

Where is my nearest Avis location? Return to Questions

Avis has over 13 locations in Ireland and 4,000 worldwide. Details of Avis locations, including telephone numbers and opening hours, are available in the Rental Locations section on this website.

You can select your most convenient Avis location when you make your booking. Once your booking is confirmed, we will arrange for the chosen vehicle to be available at the selected location at the time and date chosen.

If you need to change the rental location, you will need to modify your booking either in Online Bookings on this website.

Avis vehicles

Avis offers a wide range of vehicles, with a choice of sizes and styles to suit your requirements. All of our vehicles are, on average, under 12 months old and undergo regular maintenance and service checks prior to every rental.

Please refer to the Car Guide in the Guide to Renting for details of Avis car groups.

Can I choose the car model?

Reservations are made by car group, which may cover a number of car models. Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee a specific model at the time of booking.

Can I choose the colour of the car?

No, but you're welcome to put in a request. If we can suit your colour choice, we will.

Is additional equipment available? Return to Questions

Depending on the group of car, there may be some accessories included as standard. Items such as child seats can be requested for a small fee at the time of reservation subject to availability.

If you are booking online, please reserve these items separately by contacting the Avis location direct.

How much does rental cost? Return to Questions

We charge in periods of 24 hours, so if you take a car for 26 hours for instance, it would be charged as 2 days. We do allow a grace time of 59 minutes before we charge for an additional day. The actual cost of the rental will depend on the group of car, when you rent, for how long and where.

Why not use the Online Booking facility to obtain a quote?

If you make an Online Booking we will send you a reservation confirmation by email. You should print this and keep it for your records. When you collect your car you'll receive a Rental Agreement which shows your booking details.

How old do I need to be to rent? Return to Questions

You must be aged 23 -74 with a Full License for 1 Year on Car Groups A,B,C,D,E,F,P.26-75 with a Full License for 1 Year on Car groups G,H,I,O,L,J,M.

Can another person drive the rental vehicle? Return to Questions

The rental vehicle is normally only insured for the person who makes the rental. If others plan to drive the car, they must be added to the Rental Agreement when the car is collected. There will be a charge for each additional driver of €7 per day.

Can I take the car abroad? Return to Questions

Yes, you can take the car abroad provided that you have purchased an additional protection package available from the Automobile Association (AA) called Five Star Insurance . This insurance will have to be purchased directly from them and will have to be provided at time of pick up of your car at the Avis location.

What documents will I need to provide? Return to Questions

You will need to bring your driving license with you when you come to collect your car. It must be clean and you must have held a full clean license for at least one year. An International Driver's Permit alone isn't sufficient for rental - it can only be used in conjunction with a standard driving license.

You'll also need a credit card - we need to see it for security reasons and to identify you. Further identification, such as a passport, may also be required.

Are there mileage limits? Return to Questions

The majority of rental rates offer free unlimited mileage. However, some Avis rates will give you a limit of free mileage and charge extra for additional mileage made over that limit. You will be advised at the time of booking whether unlimited mileage is included, or you can ask at the Avis desk when you collect your car.

Will there be petrol in the car? Return to Questions

All rental cars are provided with a full tank of fuel and should be refueled prior to return to Avis, otherwise refueling charges will apply. Alternatively, you may purchase your fuel in advance - just ask at the Avis desk about the Pre-Paid Fuel Option.

Does insurance cost extra? Return to Questions

Your rental quote will include some basic insurance. You can purchase additional cover if required. Just ask at the rental desk when you collect your car. Some general information on insurance is provided in the Guide to Renting on this website.

Am I covered for liability? Return to Questions

All Avis vehicles in Ireland are automatically covered for Legal Liability, Third Party and Public Liability, as required by law. This is included in your rental price.

Can I insure against vehicle damage? Return to Questions

Most rental prices include cover for vehicle damage - Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). If it is not already included in your rental price, then Collision Damage Waiver is available to purchase at the rental desk. You can confirm what's included in your rental price at time of booking or by checking with the Avis location.

If you are covered for Collision Damage Waiver, then you will only need to pay an excess of €750 + VAT, upwards, towards the cost of repair, again regardless of whether you were at fault.

You have the option to reduce the excess to just €0 (Nil) by purchasing Excess Reduction. Please see the Insurances section in the Guide to Renting on this website for details.

Can I purchase personal accident insurance? Return to Questions

If required, you can purchase Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) when you collect your car. Should you have an accident, this will cover the driver and passenger(s) for accidental death, medical expenses and assistance and rescue. Super Personal Accident Insurance (SPAI) provides a higher level of accident cover, plus cover for personal effects and baggage. Can I purchase insurance for baggage and personal effects? Return to Questions

Yes - baggage and personal effects can be covered by Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), which is provided as part of one of our great value premium packages. For details, please see the Insurance section in the Guide to Renting on this website, or ask at the Avis desk.

If I pay by credit card , does this cover damage to the rented vehicle ? Return to Questions

Certain credit cards cover you for damage to the rented vehicle in , however you need to confirm whether your particular credit card does, in Southern Ireland , with your credit card company or issuing bank. If it has been confirmed that your credit card covers you for Car Rental Insurance in Southern Ireland and you do not wish to purchase the Avis Insurance , then you must sign the decline box on our rental agreement when collecting your car. What if I break down or need help outside office hours? Return to Questions

Avis provides free 24 hour Roadside Assistance in case of emergency, breakdown or accident involving your Avis rental car anywhere in Ireland Just call the Customer Assistance number provided on your rental document.

What happens if the car gets damaged? Return to Questions

Check over the car yourself when you first collect it. If you notice anything at all, please tell the rental agent who will record it on the Rental Agreement.The rental agent will inspect the car when you return it.

If any damage has been incurred during rental you will have to pay the cost of repair up to the replacement value of the car, unless you are covered for Collision Damage Waiver, in which case you will only have to pay an excess.

Can I extend the rental period? Return to Questions

Of course - you can extend your rental agreement at any time before or during rental. However, this will affect the cost of your rental.

Use the Online Booking facility then Modify/Cancel.

 Returning Your Car    Return to Questions

Where can I drop the car off? Return to Questions

The rental vehicle may be returned to the same location you are collecting it from, or to another Avis location - whichever is specified and available at time of booking. There is no one way fee between Cork, Dublin and Shannon.

A one-way fee will be incurred if the collection and return locations are different. Please go to the Terms & Conditions page of this Web-site.

Can I return the car outside office hours? Return to Questions

Opening times vary for each location. It is possible to drop the car off once the office has closed, as most locations have a secure Avis key drop-off box on site, but please check with the Avis station direct beforehand.

If I bring the car back early can I have a refund? Return to Questions

You'll only have to pay for the time you take the car - charged in periods of 24 hours with a 59 minute grace period. For example over 25 hours counts as 2 days.

What about payment? Return to Questions

Payment is due on return of the rental vehicle, and will include any additional services and charges incurred, subject to a final audit. Payment can be made using an Avis accepted credit card*. A remittance advice will then be issued.

Please check with your Avis location in advance should you prefer to pay by cash or cheque.

Invoices are payable immediately. Unless special agreements have been made with your company, payment should be made after receipt of your monthly account statement.

Why have I received an invoice when I paid by credit card? Return to Questions

If you paid for your rental by credit card you will be sent an invoice as a copy for your files. Your invoice should state this at the bottom of the letter: NO PAYMENT NECESSARY - THE AMOUNT DUE WILL BE CHARGED TO YOUR CREDIT CARD

What is Avis Preferred? Return to Questions

Avis Preferred service is ideal for the frequent renter. When you join the programme you just fill in one master rental agreement which means you won't have to sign paperwork at the counter again.

You can specify which car group you want and your car will be waiting for you when you arrive. So, each time you rent, you just show your license, collect your car keys and you're off.

On completion of your rental your credit card will automatically be debited and you'll be sent a statement within seven days. No waiting around, no repetitive paperwork and no problems. Even better, membership is free.

What is a Wizard number? Return to Questions

A Wizard number is unique to you and is your key to Wizard, the world's most advanced car rental information system - which is unique to Avis. Your Wizard number carries all the information required to make a booking.

So when you call central reservations or make a booking online, you only need to tell us the dates and location(s) for picking-up and dropping-off your rental car.
